Origin has no intent to distribute or sell the information we acquire from you to any third party—they are used primarily to inform us on how to personalize your experience, and are listed below:
  • Private Information: Names, addresses, phone numbers (etc) are disclosed at your own risk
  • Email address: Your email address is required upon registration in case we need to contact you. You may permit other members to contact you by enabling an option (which is in the User CP > email settings). Only we will know your emails (unless you choose to disclose them publicly) in order to protect your privacy and your email account. We monitor email activity strictly to prevent abuse.
  • Referring Address: The referring address gives us the address of the website you came from. This is used for stats-keeping purposes.
  • IP (Internet Protocol) Address: The IP address gives us a general hint of where you live (Scotland, California, Germany, etc), allowing us to provide a visit personalized to your region (e.g. automatic language detection—coming soon!). In addition, the IP address is also used to filter out and keep out "bad" visitors: hackers, spammers, etc.
  • Platform (Browser, Operating Systems, etc): The browser and its capabilities (Is javascript ON? Can the visitor view flash?) are logged so we will know whether the Instant Chat, the My Assistant feature, or the Arcade games (etc) will work for you. The ratios of browsers are logged too in order for us to understand what platforms most of our audience are on
  • Messaging activity: Although we are unable to read your personal messages (PMs), we are able to determine your frequency of use (and other general statistics). We used this information to combat unsolicited messages (Spam, flames, etc). For example, if we notice member "X" has sent 300 PMs on Tuesday the 24th, all to member "Y", we know there is a problem, and we will combat it with definite yet reasonable consequences, including (but not limited to) the disabling of the PM system exclusively for the offender.
  • Frequency of visits / Activity: We track the pages you view in order to help us determine what type of content is enjoyed most. With these information we are able to understand which pages or features are the most popular of Origin.

Beautifully well put together. Good job Grand, I read the whole thing and I agree everything is reasonable for everyone.

Rather than what? Steal? XD What are a bunch of kids going to do with an IP address or server description? The last I knew, we didn't have any hackers on staff...:D

*cough* You never know :D

Actually, the IP addresses can't exactly be used just by itself for hacking. That is, if everyone has a firewall... Or at least the windows one, turned on.

We ARE able to find out where they live, though.

Just the general area, right? Not down to their address.

... No. For example, we know you live in the Great Britain, or cyprus, or even Iraq, just with your IP. But not specific like "1234 Street St."... you know

With this, we are able to prevent access to Origin by hackers, spammers, and anyone of those sorts.

I shouldn't invite any of my friends to origin then :P

Thats good to know that our personal information is safe in the hands of Grand.

It is also worthy to note that all Staff can see most IP addresses as well. However, anyone who uses any information to their own gain, will not only get fired from Origin, banned, etc but will most likely find themselves on the sharp end of a hack themselves.

As I am probably the only Staff who would do that, and am also the one offering this warning, then there is no need to worry. But just keep it in mind if you're thinking "I'll go flame *Staff Member* safe in the knowledge he knows nothing about me". They do know your IP, and it is in your rights to know this information.

So, the "hazardous" sign can also be stapled onto people whom you currently trust :P

Shouldn't posts such as these not be part of some other sub-forum but actually posted where people can SEE it? Like on the front page? Otherwise, you lose potential posters because they think you have no regard to their privacy.

And trust me, people are VERY, very lazy.

Yeah, it does. I concede to that.

But how about to the user who has just arrived here? I showed Origin to someone else. They described it as "cluttered".

Cluttered? It's organized into categories and subcategories. I believe that's the most effective form of organization.
