Origin has no intent to distribute or sell the information we acquire from you to any third party—they are used primarily to inform us on how to personalize your experience, and are listed below:
  • Private Information: Names, addresses, phone numbers (etc) are disclosed at your own risk
  • Email address: Your email address is required upon registration in case we need to contact you. You may permit other members to contact you by enabling an option (which is in the User CP > email settings). Only we will know your emails (unless you choose to disclose them publicly) in order to protect your privacy and your email account. We monitor email activity strictly to prevent abuse.
  • Referring Address: The referring address gives us the address of the website you came from. This is used for stats-keeping purposes.
  • IP (Internet Protocol) Address: The IP address gives us a general hint of where you live (Scotland, California, Germany, etc), allowing us to provide a visit personalized to your region (e.g. automatic language detection—coming soon!). In addition, the IP address is also used to filter out and keep out "bad" visitors: hackers, spammers, etc.
  • Platform (Browser, Operating Systems, etc): The browser and its capabilities (Is javascript ON? Can the visitor view flash?) are logged so we will know whether the Instant Chat, the My Assistant feature, or the Arcade games (etc) will work for you. The ratios of browsers are logged too in order for us to understand what platforms most of our audience are on
  • Messaging activity: Although we are unable to read your personal messages (PMs), we are able to determine your frequency of use (and other general statistics). We used this information to combat unsolicited messages (Spam, flames, etc). For example, if we notice member "X" has sent 300 PMs on Tuesday the 24th, all to member "Y", we know there is a problem, and we will combat it with definite yet reasonable consequences, including (but not limited to) the disabling of the PM system exclusively for the offender.
  • Frequency of visits / Activity: We track the pages you view in order to help us determine what type of content is enjoyed most. With these information we are able to understand which pages or features are the most popular of Origin.

Speaking of the privacy policy—does it show when people sign up for origin?

Yeah, it does.  I concede to that.

But how about to the user who has just arrived here?  I showed Origin to someone else.  They described it as "cluttered".

I have a project in the pipe-line trying to counter this impression, but it is a lot of bloody hard work stongue.gif so ... members have to deal with what we have for now. Quite simply, if anyone was worried about this, they would PM myself, Grand, Daemos or Haven. That is something I try to make an impression on all newbies - us four are your first port of call for questions and answers. Origin Related is a great source for specific FAQs, along with the Origin Chronicles. Hopefully that is pretty obvious to most people ssmile.gif

I'm pretty sure Al meant that normal members may not be as familiar with a forum-style navigation than with a normal portal-website style navigation in which all links are on the left or right bar.

No, I think he meant Origin has a s*it-load of information and whatnot just floating around in random places. Coupled with the regular 1000+ posters all chatting away about in-jokes and past members, it makes a scary prospect for a newbie to try to 'infiltrate' us, as it were.

I like how you're all trying to interpret me sbiggrin.gif

I'm more with GJ on this one. The inside stuff does make it hard to do things. I mean, Keeserat is your prime example, not to take any credit away from him.
