Alot of people who want to play a form of Rock guitar usually are looking to develop speed. This basic lesson inspired by the amazing Paul Gilbert of Racer X will not only help you start improving on your speed, but it will open your horizons up to more complicated licks and riffs in the future.

First of all, you must have some fairly good control over your fingers already. So if you don't think your fingers are independent and/or fast enough, then refer to this lesson first.

Right, so now that we're good to go, the first thing I want you to do is to get this simple and very basic lick down. This is the original exercise that Paul Gilbert created. The tuning is standard.

-------------------
-------------------
--------3----------
--3-4-6---6-4-3----
-------------------
-------------------

Remember to play this slower at first. Start with a speed you're perfectly comfortable with, and work your way up from there. If performed right, the lick should sound something like this.

Once you've got that down and can play it as fast (or faster) as I can, try this alteration that I made up of it. This can also be used to apply in a solo! The fingering pattern is the same each time, you're just going up one step every time you move. Repeat each measure twice.

---------------|--------------|----------------|------------------|
---------------|--------------|----------------|------------------|
--3------------|-5------------|-7--------------|-9----------------|
----6-4-3-4-6--|---8-6-5-6-8--|---10-8-7-8-10--|---12-10-9-10-12--|
---------------|--------------|----------------|------------------|
---------------|--------------|----------------|------------------|

Once you get to the last measure, do the same thing except work your way down..so it's like this

-----------------|--------------|--------------
-----------------|--------------|--------------
--7--------------|-5------------|-3------------
----10-8-7-8-10--|---8-6-5-6-8--|---6-4-3-4-6--
-----------------|--------------|--------------
-----------------|--------------|--------------

This is how it should sound if performed correctly.
Here is the same thing, but played alot faster.

That's it guys. Hope you enjoy it. Post some recordings of your results if you like.
