What's the meaning of "emo" anyway?

We are all aware of it, the fact that all of a sudden Emos are now being scorned by society.

What I want to know is how did this come about? Last year it was Goths, and before that it was Nerds. Nowdays, you could label heaps of things emo because they seem that way.

What does everybody else think of this situation? I am no longer safe to listen to Panic at the Disco, because I'm fearful of being branded an emo and the like.

Discuss.

XD Emos took over the school. As much as I try not to stereotype, it's near impossible to do now. Honestly I don't know why there's a sudden...takeover, along with everyone saying, "Oh, he/she/it's emo"...maybe it's a trend?

I only ever use that term jokingly with people/ things. I categorize music only as emo most of the time. Unless someone is saying, "Oh I'm so emo, my life sucks even though my parents feel so bad that they'll get me anything I want if I hug them for once, but my pride and my need for attention keeps me from doing that," I won't call anyone emo without grounds to do so.

Thats a HUGE signature you got there, Odd. o_o

We don't really have many emos here. we have a few, but not much. My school is corroded by wannabe gangsters.

Yeah wasn't it cool to be emo about two years ago? Somebody please define emo for me. Or tell me what isn't emo. It seems to me that everything relating to non-positive emotions can be labeled emo nowadays. It's like "omg you have feelings! you're SO emo!"

emo music makes me happy.

So if I'm sad, am I considered Emo? Because if that definition were to hold true, we're all emo at certain points of our lives.

Therefore if you bash someone who claims to be emo, you are being hypocritical.

It's kind of if we are sad, we are emo. If we are happy, we are emo. If we deny being emo, we are emo.

Well all the heat has been taken off Goths, so I'm free to play Castlevania games now.

no no no. emos are emotionally masochistic people who dont really have problems.goths try to make others miserable with their seemingly bleak outlook on life. but emo mother f**kers try to make themselves miserable with their seemingly bleak outlook on life, and also they make others depressed to try to get people to feel sorry for them for the problems they dont have. common emo traits that ive found in my research are:
masochism (ie cutting themselves)
bisexuallity is common
tight clothing
black clothing (trying to be goth but cant)
deep depression (sometimes just to get attention)
a nasaly, plommy voice.
a poor little me attitude
hair long on the front and bleached on the tip
fish net
makeup that whitens their face and darkens their eyes
and a common emo band is hawthorne heights (they claim its punk)
and much more...
oh and castlevania rules. stongue.gif
