I guess we could do it manually, but there's the whole issue of honesty. If there's any way we can officially record our scores, we can do it like that.
Anyway, double elimination means you have to to lose twice to be eliminated. Let me show an example bracket, we'll name 8 competitors each with a respective letter.
A]-
....|[A]-
B]-
.........|[D]-
C]-
....|[D]-
D]-
..............|[D]
E]-
....|[F]-
F]-
.........|[F]-
G]-
....|[G]-
H]-
This would be your standard single-elimination bracket, and in this example, D would win. Now let me illustrate the same case, but with double-elimination. This half of the bracket would stay the same, but the losers of each round go to a new bracket that gives them a chance to win at the end. Under the ----------------- is the losers bracket.
A]-
....|[A]-
B]-
.........|[D]-
C]-
....|[D]-
D]-
..............|[D]
E]-
....|[F]-
F]-
.........|[F]-
G]-
....|[G]-
H]-
-----------------------------------
......[A]-
[B]-......[C]-
.....|[C]-
[C]-
.................|[G]
[E]-
.....|[E]-
[H]-.....|[G]-
......[G]-
So now, you can see that G has won in the losers bracket, and now faces D for the championship. I hope this illustration makes sense, but I can discuss it in more detail if it doesn't. If we do this tough, I can take care of managing the bracket so as to avoid confusion, and I think once we get going, you'd be able to see how it works.
