Industry Minister Jim Prentice is set to table a bill in the house of commons this afternoon (June 4 2008) that will allow users to be fined up to $500 for each “personal use download” that they partake in through peer-to-peer file-sharing.

Other fun features of the bill include making it illegal to unlock cellphones, copy music-protected CDs to iPods, and copy time-shifted TV shows to PVRs.

Would you spend 99 cents to download each song, or would you risk a 500 dollar fine? Or would you give up on music entirely?

I'd just do it the legal way, as I do now... >_>

Related to this story, California may soon subject digital music purchases to sales tax because the courts have now deemed digital files "tangible property."

His post did make it seem like he frequented peer to peer file sharing.

Just because he doesn't download music doesn't mean he doesn't peruse P2P networks for other purposes, like obtaining illegal copies of software <_<

Oh, I had the foresight to see this day coming a long time ago. So I prevented myself from downloading music so that I wouldn't have to worry about breaking illegal habits.

And if you believe that line of bullshit, I bet I can sell you life insurance because of the immediate impacts of global warming.

Not that I download anyway, unless I'm not in the US. I use Pandora, Last.fm, Yahoo Launchcast, etc...

That's because you can.

Well, kind of—just not T3 or fiber-optic Internet access, but you can't pirate either of those FROWN.GIF

Righto -- Also because of my vast record/cassette/CD collection. Most of which is inherited.

Well, to offer a new view, this sucks, I hope they don't do anything like that here. I might have to go back to using audio tape to record songs from the radio.

If you download 1000 songs in one transaction, is that only a single 500 dollar fine?
