Russia invades Georgia while the West watches. How did it come to this?

For the best possible illustration of why Islamic terrorism may one day be considered the least of our problems, look no further than the BBC's split-screen coverage of Friday's Olympics opening ceremony. On one side, fireworks sparkled, and thousands of exotically dressed Chinese dancers bent their bodies into the shape of doves, the cosmos, and so on. On the other side, gray Russian tanks were shown rolling into South Ossetia, a rebel province of Georgia. The effect was striking: Two of the world's rising powers were strutting their stuff.

Is this it then? Is Russia back to being an aggressor? Is Putin their true leader?
Will China and Russia become the world's two new superpowers? Will the USA get the short end of the stick? Is our political RP coming true?

Nope.

Georgia attacked because Russians were in one particular region, in hopes that Russia would retaliate and make it a bigger issue. And that has happened.

And Georgia got owned.

Georgia probably expected western assistance. Bad timing, though. Bush is busy watching sports. And we all know how important sports is to Americans!

Well, we also know how stretched the military is. Now we wouldn't want to stall the Bin Laden chase more than we have to, do we?

The United States would never ever have aided the Georgians, unless it was officially recognized as an international conflict, as opposed to the regional conflict it is now. If either country fought beyond the North Georgian (now South Russian) area of South Ossetia, the conflict would probably have been viewed on a different light.

The United States is lucky that Georgia never joined NATO, as they tried to, otherwise we would be forced to get involved.

Remember the revolutions in eastern Europe that happened in countries that were expecting US assistance? Same thing, I suspect.

But yes, you're right: the US does not want to fight against Russians. They are scary.

This is probably why Georgia wanted to join NATO...

I've never understood. Are we and Russia friends or enemies or bed fellows that enjoyed a really badly done out one night stand (metaphorically)?

Bush claims to be Putin's friend. I think Putin's just more assertive than other post-USSR Russian leaders.

So, update: Russia has now gone South, seizing major cities and nearing the capital, well beyond an invasion of areas of questionable ownership. That's outright, brute invasion now.

Georgia should've picked on someone its own size.

In order news, it ejected itself from the group of nations that were part of the Soviet Union. And Russia decided to halt military activities in Georgia for now.

Georgia should also have waited until after the Olympics.

I don't believe Georgia is at fault. You can't believe the reports coming out about who started it just yet.

So, today Americans have said they will supply "aid." ...so what?

No, we're sending all our illegals. The russians can draft them to help kill the georgians.

I had a Russian cab driver coming back from the airport. I asked him about it. He said, "terrible."
