Just last week, China sought to ban porn from the masses, as they now require filters installed on computers coming in. My question for you:

1) Should China ban porn? Did the One-Child Policy cause this?

2) Is there ever an ethical view to ban such media? Should it be banned? Why? Why not?

1. That's its thing to deal with. As for the one-child policy part, it depends on whether you think porn induces sexual thought or relieves sexual thought.

2. If people want it, there's no reason they shouldn't get it, except those who don't have good firewalls or antiviruses or are stupid enough to look at that stuff in public places...like work.

I think this thread just got a lot more interesting, just a year later. Why?

1. Facebook is banned in China
2. YouTube is banned in China
3. China is looking to ban Skype

Interesting how all things Western are being blocked out. How much longer can China keep this up?

Maybe they'll ban white people from entering? I like the idea of segregating asians from the rest of the world, personally.

Well, my argument was on technology. Yours was people oriented. Whole different ballgame, bro.

Unless I'm mistaken, facebook and skype are about connecting with people.

Yes but those are technologies. I'm debating the banning of tech, not the shipping out of people.

Red herring much...?

Cutting off communication ties with the outside world is part of the segregation. But whatever. I don't see why a government (or parent for that matter) is not allowed to ban certain technology. Why are you against it? (Remember, you can't say because you want them to talk to westerners)

It's not because it's western. It's because it doesn't bow down to the demands of the central authorities. For example, Baidu will take down whatever the government disagrees with (no arguments). Google's less of a pushover.

China's isolationist, at first glance, but I'd prefer to call them simply careful. Deliberate, maybe.
