I downloaded the RC (and bought the pre-release too on Amazon for $50). I would say it looks much more aesthetically pleasing, but I wasn't able to get the full effect, as on 2 GB of RAM and running 1 GB of RAM on just the emulator killed the ability to enjoy a full effect.

Likewise, IE did start up faster, and I felt like 7 would be better. Has anyone else tried it out (besides Jinghao? stongue.gif)?

I've wanted to try it, but I've heard some pretty negative things. Either way, this laptop wouldn't be able to handle it. 512 mb of RAM trying to run Windows 7? I....don't think it would work very well :/

When I took an operating systems class, my professor described it as "the way Vista should have been." Any thoughts on that?

I use Windows 7 every day. I have a work laptop running Win 7, and it runs very well. You wouldn't believe it, but it's a shitty dell with 1 gb of ram—and even so, Win 7 breezes by.

I'm not sure about 512 megs of ram. For that, it depends on what applications you are running. On 1 gb of ram, Win 7 itself uses about 300 megs. On 512 megs, it'll probably use around 200 megs. (It uses more by prefetching stuff to make things faster)

Keep in mind, the RC builds which we're using are just that—TEST builds. They have a lot more instructions for the machine to crank through related to debugging and logging. Right now they basically log all of the actions and have inlined tests within the system to alert you when an error happens. When the final release is produced, all that is wiped off and you should get an operating system that's up to twice as fast as the test build.

I am excited.

I was on the original beta testing, as soon as it was mad available. I really liked it; I only wish my school's network would let me connect with it.

Mainly, I'm glad they didn't nix dialup support *Grin*

RC is way faster than Beta. I think RC has much fewer of the test-logging in the machine instructions.

o_O Dialup. You serious?

Er, most of the time, I'm running Firefox, MSN, Pidgin, Team Viewer, Notepad, Open Office, iTunes/Winamp (Winamp for whenever I'm broadcasting for the radio, otherwise it's iTunes), uTorrent, plus maybe a few other things... I lag slightly enough as-is and I'm only on Windows XP. Would Windows 7 be better or worse?

The Beta still ran pretty well, considering. I'm looking forward to the full release.

Yep. There is not enough interest for the phone company to put DSL up through, or for cable companies to run their lines.

There isn't even a cell phone antenna close enough to my house for wireless service. I spend most of my time in a nearby city.

Woah, how did you do that? Can it do chemistry? Like mechanisms and organic molecules and stuff.

I'm sure you can get a chemistry extension. I'm not sure how well that would work because although most CS majors are well-practiced in mathematics and physics, they usually aren't as experienced in chemistry...
