Initial Thoughts: At $499, its very, very affordable. Good touchscreen, but I hate the iPhone keyboard. Good for eBooks. I don't think its a netbook or eBook killer yet. Sony has a comparable eBook that is very good and plays music. No camera. No support for Flash. 1.7 lbs.

What do you guys think? The commenters over at Gizmodo weren't very impressed.

what if you have no nose, either. I mean, if you lost all your fingers, it's not a far stretch to assume you lost your nose too.

I'm sad that I can't use a pen on this thing. I was so excited when I thought I could use a pen...

Agreed; the absence of a stylus is a deal-breaker. Without one, composing Feynman diagrams would simply be an exercise in finger-painting. Also: a TeX app is mandatory.

I look forward to future generations of the iPad. But yes, this is something I may purchase in the soon to distant future.

I've heard it described as a "fill in the blanks" tablet. Need to show someone in the meeting a building on google maps? pull out the ipad. Need to check the drudge report on the go? Need to scribble down some notes digitally, but a laptop is too big and rude? Watch videos without the keyboard? I'm sure I'm leaving out 1,001 uses, but I can really see the benefit. I'm starting to see them all over, too. People seem to find a lot of use in them, and the portability combined with the functionality is unmatched.

That's what I want to use it for, but it's not a tablet. Gr.

I'm going to get an iPad...as soon as it won't take a significant percentage of my net worth to buy it. Probably the middle-memory version, and definitely with 3G. The only argument that seemed compelling against it is the 'cant run two things simultaneously and access them via a toolbar' bit, but I can't imagine a scenario where I'd need to, considering the things I use a computer for.

That's why I'm waiting for the 2nd or 3rd generation.

The iPad 3g became much less compelling after ATT got rid of the unlimited data plan.

I don't think I'd exceed the data usage...hopefully. 2G is a lot right?

Well, one page load of Facebook comes with around a meg of stuff—javascript, css, html, not to mention all the other stuff that happens asynchronously. So if Facebook is all you browse, 2000 page loads is the most you get.

I think you might want to use it for video and voice, but it seems like that won't be possible.
