I believe that if you're going to do something, do it well.

Please be less like Microsoft and more like Apple, Google.

I anticipate a flame war shortly.

You mean, be less open (How many devices does your Windows 7 support? How open are the SDKs? What about Apple's app platform?)?

Be more simple. Do one thing, and do it well, and reinvest back.

Apple certainly isn't a one-shop store. They have computers, operating systems, peripherals, music players, phones, even tablets.

...Not to mention browsers, and other things.

And they do them all pretty well.

When was the last ingenious thing Microsoft pioneered and shattered the market with? I think it would have been Windows 95.

Lots of things.

Kinect would be my favorite. Office is really well-designed. Visual studio is the easiest development tool to use for windows software development. Their mice and keyboards are very good too.

Windows 7 Phones are pretty good.

Do realize that Apple was not the first in any of those departments, except the multi-touch phone.

Microsoft deserves more credit than you give it. You're just taking everything Microsoft for granted.

The thing that just came out doesn't count. It certainly hasn't shattered any market yet.

Microsoft may have its hands in everything, but Windows is all it's ever dominated in. And even then, that's fading. Notice how each version of Windows progressively looks and operates more and more like Linux and Apple? Hmm.

What about all the other things I mentioned—Office, VS, and their peripherals?

I don't think Windows looks more like Apple or Linux any more than they look like Windows.
