"The Federal Bureau of Investigation shut down the three largest online poker sites Friday in what appears to be the largest crackdown on illegal online gambling to date.

Eleven executives at PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Abslute Poker have been charged with bank fraud, money laundering, and illegal gambling offenses. Prosecutors are seeking to immediately shut down the sites and recover $3 billion from the firms.

"As charged, these defendants concocted an elaborate criminal fraud scheme, alternately tricking some U.S. banks and effectively bribing others to assure the continued flow of billions in illegal gambling profits," said U.S. Attorney for Manhattan Preet Bharara in a statement."

This sucks for all of those players that had a bank roll on those sites. But I do think that online gambling should be banned. It's just too easy for people who get addicted to that sort of thing easily to access. Not to mention that so many gambling sites have been shut down for programming unfair odds into their games and screwing people out of untold amounts of cash. In my opinion, the only casinos that should be available are the ones in real life, and they should be heavily regulated to make sure that there is no cheating going on.

The real problem is the money laundering. These sites are all based in different countries and lied to American banks about where the money was coming from—claiming that their proceeds were from merchandise sales instead of gambling profits.

Whether or not you think that gambling, online or otherwise should be legal, it isn't, so what these sites were facilitating and profiting from is illegal.
