The History of Origin XT Network:

Preamble:
This took me almost an hour to type up, so hold on guys! This is for anyone wishing to know anything about Origin's backgrounds... and willing to read through pages of information.

The Beginning...
Origin RPG Forums started on July 2002 by me, Jinghao Yan (GRAND) - Because I am member number 1, it is logical for my registration date to be the "Date of Installation". The forum started out as just an extention of the main site (Called Grand DBZ at the moment - you may wonder where I got the name GRAND swink.gif ) with the free, opensource script phpBB. When it began, it had no specific purpose - not to get members, not to start a community, none of the obvious. It started as a substitute for my guestbook, which I could not get to work at the time (The G.Guest 1.0 my first version, believe it or not). But sadly, the server went down for two months - during the supposedly "most active" time of the year - Summer.

The Recovery...
When the server finally recovered after two months of downtime, our main site never became popular the way it was. Just for comparison, before the downtime, the main site got over 2000 unique visitors everyday. After the downtime, it never recovered to any more than 500 unique visitors everyday - and that was WITH advertising. And now, without advertising, Origin (Forums alone) reaches 100 unique visitors everyday. Not too bad considering how much downtime we have, and the fact that we never advertise anymore.

Even after the two months of downtime, the server still crashed very often. At least one or two short crashes a week (few minutes to a few hours) and sometimes even a few days. So the uptime, I estimate, is no more than 80% of the time - Not including the downtime during the summer of 2002.

The Move to vBulletin...
A few days after the recovery, I "discovered" a new forum script - vBulletin. (Hey, making the site/forum was the only reason I stayed online) I got one from one of our affiliates (Not knowing it wasn't free) and attempted to install it. The installation was a hassle, and the end result was horrendous. Being the first forum I ever gone on, and the first forum I EVER "became" admin at, I had no idea what to do.

Entrance of the Co-Founder...
Then Geno (Now known as Xeno, the fourth member of the forums) emailed me concerning the forums. He informed me that he could not post or do anything on the forums. I wasn't really obligated to do anything with the forums, nor did I know how to do anything with the forums, so I replied telling him that I did not know how to turn posting on. But he kept insisting that I do, so I finally logged into the controls that haunted me for so long. After looking in the vBulletin controls for quite some time, I finally found the switch to turn on posting. This was the reason why he is considered "Co - Founder" - Without his insistance, I would have never "fixed" the forums.

Now that Geno became active (3 posts a day for half a week was VERY active considering the size of the forums at 10 posts...) I found more reason to work on the forums. First thing I did, was to make SSJ4Gohan (Info writer for the main site, at the time) mod powers. We posted, but not very much raising only 100 posts the first months after recovery. Then HavenMaster (Haven - one of our affiliates) came and became a moderator as well. This is when we entered the "posting feuds" where Gohan and Haven posted in strings increasing their posts quite a bit. (I'm always the last one to enter since my time is 3 hours later than Haven and Gohan's) At the end of the second month, we reached around 300 posts.

Entrance of my Friend, "Starlight Chaos"...
This is when "Starlight Chaos" (Aevynn, at the time, a friend of mine who just moved away) came into the scene. Shortly after the entrance of Aevynn (I'll just use this name because it's shorter), MajinVegeta (Leviat, now) arrived on Origin. He became mod in only a short while (Hmm, I wonder why stongue.gif), and has been that way for most of his time on Origin. And I believe, at around the same time as the arrival of Leviat, Gotenks (Real name is Gabe, but is now known as Kazin - not active anymore) entered the scene. He became a staff member instantly for Origin (Current name). Soon after the arrival of all these members, SSJ4_Vegeta (Haha, here comes Kugjen) entered the scene as well. When he entered, he was a mass spammer (No offence bro), but he slowly got better (Took him a year though). At this time of the life of Origin, Geno was "mysteriously" gone.

Beginning of Appearance...
Just a few weeks after the appearance of these "memorable members", who are still at least somewhat active on Origin (Except Kazin/Gabe/Gotenks), Trunks (Now known as Nesticles. He isn't active at the moment, but he sure was when he arrived on the scene.) He was a fan of our main site, and talked to me on MSN. This is where I showed him the forums where he became mod at. (See? Origin was bloated with mods at one time - of course, relative to the active members) Nesticles then invited Kiro, who is still active to this present day, to the forums. This is the time where I moved to a different city, leaving Gotenks (Kazin, Gabe, whatever) Origin. (Haha Haven, I remember you being jealous of him haha!)

Fusion...
This is the point in time where I decided to "fuse" forums with Aevynn. It wasn't necessarily the best choice, because his forums were empty with no posts except his own, no other members, nothing special. Of course, at first members were not very approving of this decision. They thought that it would be wrong for the admin powers to be granted to Aevynn (I know him in real life, so you might guess why). At the time, Aevynn wasn't a very likable guy at all. Of course he got better with time.

Adam now comes...
Now appears Adam (Cheese Wiz, "god", and so on.) on the scene. He was also a friend of mine from school. He was a kind and trustworthy guy who had helped Origin quite a lot. This was also the time when the first RPG for Origin entered into the scene. Adam helped in creating a few of the best items in the shop. Sadly this was not transfered to the RPG we have at the moment. Also, thanks to Adam, we switched to IPB, the forum script we are using at the moment.

The Big Crisis...
About one month after Trunks became mod, he and I became entangled in an argument, partially about Aevynn becoming admin. When I informed him that Kiro (His "friend") blocked him (on MSN), he became very angry and deleted half the forums before I had the time to un-mod him. Of course, this is the point in time where I lost my trust for much of our staff. Just when I thought all of Origin that we had worked on for so long were gone (I never made backups back then, nor did we have the recycle bin features), our host informed us that he had moved our servers elsewhere, and had a copy of everything from three days ago. I thought, "Wow, how lucky is it, that our host backed up the whole server on exactly the right day?" From this point on, I won't be mentioning any more "memorable members" as too many are entering at this time. Fine fine, I'll just list them in chronological order: NeoSsjin, SSJ_Jimbo (Shad0w), SSJ4Bart (Roger Smith), and so on.

Death of the Host...
Just when we thought Origin won't be going through downtimes anymore (Remember, new server) our host was billed twice for the servers as he forgot to cancel the old server which we were moved from. This was when he ran into a money crisis, and decided to cancel the hosting. This was april of 2003, when the server was unplugged. Luckily, I had a backup before he could unplug it, so not all of the data were lost. But we, yet again, missed out on the active times of summer.

Rebirth of Origin...
Four to five months later, at the end of August, Origin found a new host, ready to re-start. We decided on a new name, Origin, and many other factors. This was also the entrance time of many of our active members today: Antony, Wolfwood, and so on. Despite Origin's bad start-up times (Wow, right when summer ends huh? -_-) Origin's activity boomed. We doubled in members and posts that we gained over the past year, in just one month. But unfortunately, Origin's webserver was not at its best when the boom occured. The mySQL system kept crashing (Wrong version number), and was not fixed for at least two weeks. This was immensely distracting, especially post wise, when you are literally blocked from posting until I come home and "fix" the tables. (MySQL Tables)

Our host FINALLY fixes the mySQL system...
After our host finally upgraded our buggy MySQL system, the server was one of the best we've ever been on. No downtimes, no MySQL crashes, nothing of that sort. Then a few months later, our host switched servers. This was the first downtime we had on this server that is unrelated to MySQL crashes. We thought all will be well on the new server once the move is done, but it wasn't. Many of you members might have noticed how Origin crashes once or twice every few weeks. But fortunately, this is nothing like the crashes we experienced on our very first server that we were on during late 2002 and early 2003.

**Passages done by Odd**

The Takeover Attempt...
After a rocky start to 2004, many members had become frustrated with Jinghao (the only root admin at the time) for different reasons, which cannot be disclosed with any specifics. As a result of the tension between Jingy and other staff members (including myself, Wolf, and others), one of the other Administrators, Garlic Junior, staged somewhat of a coup in February and manipulated Jinghao's account in order to demote him and keep him out of the ACP. Many of the other staff members became involved, once again including myself. The original purpose of the "takeover" was to show Jingy just how far we were willing to take things in order to improve Origin, with or without his help. After short negotiations (and Jingy's swift reclaiming of the board against our will, stongue.gif), an agreement was met and things went back to normal for quite a while.

The Pre-Summer Boom
In May of 2004, a few months after the short takeover, the arrival of several new members sparked an emormous posting spree that brought previously unseen numbers to the eyes of the staff. Members like Dragonrazor (Raven), Citrakite Zenaria, and Einhander were a part of this explosion. To bring this boom into perspective, in a one month span from May 5th to June 5th 2004, there was a record 15,450 posts. In the entire year of 2007 so far, the members of this forum have only posted 28,083 times. The sheer volume of posts during that period of time caused Origin to have memory/storage issues (if memory is not failing me), forcing Jingy to create almost daily back-ups for fear of a server mishap. It is still safe to say that it was the most active time in our history.

Conclusion...
In conclusion, even though Origin has been open ever since July of 2002, the total downtimes (Up to 8 months) really affected the growth of Origin. Now that the server is as stable as ever, Origin has the space it needs to expand. Maybe one day, Origin will reach the size of the larger and more active forums that dominate the web.

I'd like to go into further details myself when I have the chance. I have many "memories" from back in 2002 that I would like to share, including some minor corrections of Grand's statements. sbiggrin.gif

I'll start from when I joined:

Back in October of 2002, on the 16th, I joined the forums as HavenMaster. I had sent an e-mail to grand to become his affiliate and expand my site. The idea didn't work to well, but I found another place I could stay. sbiggrin.gif I finally found the forums after many days of searching Grand's site (and finding multiple errors). When I registered, the forums' total post count was barely over 300, if that. I became a moderator the next day, and helped better organize the forums and the few topics Grand had. I was member 17, but the only active member of three. Those three were me, Gohan, and Grand. We posted a lot in past standards, actually reaching around 30 posts a day, lol. After a week of slow posting, a new member joined that is still with us today, Majin Vegeta, now known as Leviat. He added a new perspective to the forums with his opinions, though he wasn't actually active for another month. He posted for about five days, and then disappeared.

We were back down to three active members when I convinced my friend, SSJ4_Vegeta to join the forums. He started off good for about two days, and then proved himself to be a horrid spammer. We warned him many times for months, until he finally learned to control his spam better. It was annoying, but it helped increase the post count by over 500 posts in only three weeks. Around the same time SSJ4_Vegeta joined (now Kugjen), a member named Starlight Chaos joined the forums, who I didn't know was Grand's friend for a couple months. He didn't start off as a likeable guy, but he has gotten so much better that I have become friends with him as well and have had multiple RP'ing contests and stories with him.

Then in Mid-November, we found the help we really needed. A new member joined the forums while I was away for a funeral on November 16th, and was instantly made a second admin of the forums. That members name is now Kazin. He was very talented and helped us reach new levels a posting stats and organization. I have to admit I was jealous, because he accomplished in a day what took me a month to do. He inspired large rates and posting competitions between himself, gohan and I that brought the forums finally over our first great barrier. The Ten thousand post mark. This was also the time Majin Vegeta returned and began to post more. He made the Sports forum a fun place to post, and became a friend with everyone on the forums, except Grand. He has told me many times that he just doesn't like Grand for some reason that is unknown to even him.

During December, and mostly around Christmas time, the post counts dropped like a rock. Everyone was not yet attatched to the forums, and spent most of their winter break offline. Even me. Grand was left alone with his thoughts.

The next month, after New Year's, I returned along with Majin to find the forums barren, but also with a new Rpg system that we had not been warned about. It took a while to bring up the posts, but we accomplished our goal due to the arrival of a new member named Trunks. He came on and after a few short days proved his worth to the forums, and was made a moderator. I was also of course jealous of Trunks for a short time, until a had a few conversations with him, and found that he was a good person. A month later we discovered Gohan had quit the forums because of his school-life. It was a harsh blow...

Not long after that, Grand did something, I forget what, that caused Trunks to deleted nearly 50% of the forums. Luckily, Grand's host had prevailed and he was able to save the deleted topics and posts. Trunks was banned, but came back to post again soon after, and has never really returned to be as devoted as we was. He concerned himself mainly with the Rpg, which had taken a huge jump in popularity. The arrival of Adam, or CheeseWizard as we like to call him, sparked the creation of the most legendary RP topic to date, The Grand Pub.

((I'll stop here for now, but there is more to come, sbiggrin.gif, I have to get off now))

Sorry chris stongue.gif I'll quote this: "From this point on, I won't be mentioning any more "memorable members" as too many are entering at this time. Fine fine, I'll just list them in chronological order: NeoSsjin, SSJ_Jimbo (Shad0w), SSJ4Bart (Roger Smith), and so on." There's too many names...

Anyways, when i first came here, i remember the person who was the friendlest with me, it was kujen formly known as vash. He was helpful to alot of the newbies, as this point he was admin, but he got kicked from admin, as he had alot of arguments with all the other staff...He was a cool admin ya know. Hehehe, this forums been open since july 2002 but i joined in argust 2003, hehe. I joined while the most respectable remembered members were here, but they left a few months later (wonder if it was because of me) i been ere 8-9 months, and i dunno when i will quit, but i hope to reach 12months. stongue.gif

Hmm...

I joined long long ago. August 18th I think...My greatest friend at the time (Wrath) had been bugging me like hell to join the forums. I finally gave in. I clicked the link and I knew my world would change. I registered as "Wolfwood"...Then I heard Kiro deleted a bunch of members (I thought he was an a-hole stongue.gif) and then registered AGAIN. I was instantly greeted by Vash. I began my posting spree. I met many people. Gaining 100 Posts in one day, I was instantly a moderator for the gaming forums. A few days later, I became Shop Keeper. I first added the famous Wooden Sword stongue.gif Bow before me! Many of my works were placed into use (The First Battle System, The First Weapons/Armor Chart, Many weapons and armor in the shop, etc, etc, etc. I befriended many people...stongue.gif lots of good stuff. Now I'm the 2nd Highest Poster, Shop Keeper (Again), and one of the leaders of the Rebel Faction! ssmile.gif

Garlic.... :'( Nothin bout Leviat, not a word? lol. And Wolf, remember the Creative Directors Inc? lol. Haven, I used to bush at Vegeta_ssj4(Kugjen) a lot, didnt I? lol.

I feel like doin MY history, because that's what this thread has become. let's see.....

Came here, posted a bit, and boy, let me tell ya, I posted f*cking slow. Maybe 4 posts an hour lol. Yeah, I think around that time I was the life of the site stongue.gif, now Im just a Hure (lol Xeno). I bushed at Kugjen a lot cuz of his one word posts, became friends with Kazin cuz he played football as well, and I quit Mod for like a week but then he told me to come back and so I did. Um, I think bout this time Nesticles came and I had a Quotes Thread named after me, cuz I never mis-interpreted in around 8 pages of quotes. I pm'd Kiro sayin one of his poems was cool, and we started talking......at some point I just got bored as hell and left for an extended period of time.

I tried to come back to find the site Just didn't work, contacted Grand who said some nerdy s*it I didnt understand, and then came back again a while later with Haven (Why our Hp's would be f*ckED). Next cool thing that happened was Garlic comin, who at first I thought was a real prick who only knew about metal music lol, but now he's my best Origin buddy. Um, then Wolfy came and he was pretty cool, we started some Creative Directors Inc (pointless) with ideas for Grand...

Um, then I became extremely irritated with everything and didn't like anyone (especially Wolf), cussed a lot at people, purposely got Kugjen to spam me, was on and off the site for a month or so. At some point here we made the name Origin, and Aevynn wanted that s*it thing WoW instead of Origin, even though Origin sounded cooler and WoW was just f*cking f*cked up. Then things were cool again, and I think about this time I started talking to Xeno more. Oh, but thru that outbreak I became friends with Wolf again.

well... amusing.. I might as well tell my side of the story...

I had originally came on after Nesticles continually bothered me about this new and hip site, Granddbz. In all honesty, I had come just so he wouldn't blast off at nothing again. So, I signed up as Kiro, and started posting around. Of course, this place wasn't that bad, though a tad small (I was 34th member).

After I had accumulated a small number of posts and friends, I soon declined into a series of lapses, where I didn't care about anything. This would explain my incredibly low post count. During the first of these dips, I had blocked Nesticles because of his extreme tendancy to act like an ass. Grand, unknowing of the situation, told him I was on, and all hell broke loose. Thankfully, it was restored, though not fully. The series of falls and rises was parallel to my sensitivity on how grand addressed issues on origin, and other more personal things (mostly grand, lol). I suppose this is why I still can't seem to stay on here for an extended period of time. Even when grand gave me the position of shopkeeper, I did things I shouldn't have from lack of respect and stopped coming.

With my newest return to Origin, the wave motion of my life has receded, and I have more time to post and be slightly more active. Indeed, the site has seen a lot without me, and I regret not being able to watch it grow as the others have. But I (and I'm sure you all do, too) have a special place in your heart for this place... Life just wouldn't be the same without it.

Or icey.. life wouldn't be the same without her, either.

I shall continue my story where grand left off. I believe it was during June or July of 2003. Grand had been trying to contact me very hard. I mean, he had forum members hunt me down... Leading me to remind myself grand is a stalker. In any case, if there is anyone here that I owe for bringing me back, It would be Dark Haven, I think you were known as Dark Parallax when I returned. (now known as kugjen). We talked a lot back then, he gave me an signature. I don't quite know how things deteriorated between us, perhaps it was after I found the sig you gave me on another webpage, but that isn't part of the history.

I now worked for some time on the hellsing section of Origin. This lasted for a short time, when I became very involved in school, and I had to stop working with grand. Before I wandered off, I was on good terms with trunks (nesticles when I returned). I came on and off for a short time, however, I tried to come back at some times to find the forums and the main site down. But I kept trying, and was lured back. This time I stayed, and I have been back ever since.

When I returned, I came back to a world I did not recognize. I tried to remember Haven, but just barely. Garlic was new to me as many other members were. I began to talk to leviat a lot as well. I also talked to garlic, and throughout 2003, I began to know people again, however, it had seemed as if Kugjen was a stranger with me now (I can't remember so well).

Since then, I have gained offical recognition as Co-founder, however, I have grown somewhat distant. I hope to keep a bit more active now, and in the future.

Took me 5 minutes to read through all the posts...

This topic is a HUGE factor in why your forums will not grow, but will in fact shrink into nothingness. Because you look to the past too much instead of moving on to the future.
