It's pretty retarded, more issue lumping, which I hate. But I haven't really followed the news much lately.

It's an Oldsmobile.

And yes. Unfortunately, I'm still driving it.

Can I have it?

(Like, this is kind of a serious question because the car I currently drive is 15 years old, the engine light is coming on consistently and my mother expressed some interest in getting a new car in the near future)

I was gonna ask the same thing, but damn, your car is older than mine.

I hope that anyone who still needed closure regarding 9/11 got it. I doubt much of anything will change, and to put it delicately, I just don't care that they got him. He wasn't the only one who planned, let alone carried out, the 9/11 attacks, or the others that have hit other nations in the years since. Mike put it pretty well, he was the "Boogeyman" of 9/11, the figurehead/symbol that everyone can fear and despise when they see his picture or hear his name. I'd go as far as to say that if Bin-Laden were never born, 9/11, or something very similar would have still happened. So as I said, if I'm glad about anything, it's that people have gotten some sort of closure out of his death. A lot of people have been asking me if I believe he's really dead or not. Kind of a strange question to ask it seems, my answer is that I don't know and don't care.

RIM may be behind in what is perceived as the popular sector, and certainly in terms of flashiness, but business people by and large, excluding in certain sectors of the technology industry itself, just plain use blackberries and will for the foreseeable future.

Edit: Grabbed some google stats-- there's around 120 million BB users, iPhone recently sold its 50 millionth.

My condolences.

I haven't had any super-close friends pass away. I imagine what Mike said about a heart condition is true, it's very unusual to have a heart attack at that age in perfect health.

I'm sorry for your loss. How close were you with him?

QUOTE (Dancing Fool @ Mar 17 2011, 12:19 PM)
Taken from MSN.com - User: LostOnEarth

Capitalism, the very thing that once made the American Dream a possible achievement has long since diverged from its role as the great economic equalizer to that of a societal hindrance. It has been many years since the American Dream of relative personal wealth was an attainable goal; the elusive "Dream" has been stolen by the capitalist economic practices of this country. The desire to prosper has been replaced by the struggle to subsist in a society that values low retail prices over livable minimum wages for the workers who form the basis of our economy. In this essay I will examine the morality of American capitalism as it relates to the treatment of its lower echelons of workers. I will begin with a description of capitalism and how its principles lend it to this perversion. Next, I will discuss the current distribution of economic power in this country and how this is central to our problems. Finally, I will present my conclusions about capitalist practices in America and how they are killing the American dream.
Capitalism relies on the idea that we are not enough in and of ourselves, but that we can increase our happiness by purchasing material goods. The root of this issue is that it depends on the consumers having little self esteem. It is the job of the advertising industry to force this idea into the mainstream. And then continually reinforce that if the last purchase bought no gain, the next one will. Similarly, modern managerial practices demean employees with base policies such as drug testing, broadcast suspicion, and micromanaging the work day for exactly the same reasons. It is intended that we continue to act as cogs in the capitalist machine whether or not it is just, or in our best interests.
The fact that advertising demeans the value of human life and emphasizes possessions over true self-created happiness highlights the parasitic nature of the capitalist system. It thrives on the sense of inadequacy that it creates and reinforces, thereby continuing a vicious cycle of resigned participation in American consumerism.
Capitalism is run by corporations which by nature exist solely and unapologetically to make a profit. These profits are generated by m****ducing manufactured goods at the lowest possible cost then inflating the price when selling the goods back to the people who helped create them. Wall Streets demand for earning drives corporate direction but it would be wrong to say that corporations have no interest in the consumer. They are concerned with fulfilling the customer's every desire, for a price. And we pay dearly for the choices they offer.
Capitalism is said to provide the opportunity to achieve the American dream. With good work ethic, financial sense, and a little bit of luck, you too could become a wealthy entrepreneur. But this dream is hopelessly outdated and becoming increasingly difficult to achieve. The American Dream is becoming a myth and
"a means of laying blame. In the puritan legacy, hard work is not merely practical but also moral; its absence suggests an ethical lapse. A harsh logic dictates a hard judgment: If a person's diligent work leads to prosperity, if work is a moral virtue, and if anyone in the society can attain prosperity through work, then the failure to do so is a fall from righteousness"
(Shipler, 6)

I don't know if that's the same guy, or if he plagiarized that, but I was able to find the original comment, I'm sure there's a reason it has 18 thumbs down.

I was looking for your response, but couldn't find it. Then I realized that's because it was only showing the lowest rated comments. Some guy on there said you plagiarized Glenn Beck, great job!

As for your actual response, well said, the only thing I don't like is actually that you didn't respond to the rest of it. Just for argument, what if all of his good point were in the second half? Other than the fact that he uses "corporation" every 5th word ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9rCc4SZNSI ), his first paragraph of the second page (I suppose it will be in the link I posted at the beginning of this post) was something I recall you talking about when we were discussing Wal Mart at some point in the past.

So my overall question is, how do you respond to that?

QUOTE (Simply Fabulous @ Feb 12 2011, 12:22 AM)
I was teaching a group of six students C++ this evening in one of the classrooms of the science building, when a campus security officer walked in to close up. I was moderately dressed up (I like to look snazzy every now and then), and the guard mistook me for a professor, apologized for interrupting class, and left.

Earlier this last fall, I took out a number of books on French Judaism for a term paper when the librarian, mistaking me for a professor, asked me if I was new, and asked what class I was teaching.

Apparently I have the look =)
